Pope’s Apology to Canadian Indigenous People
Aanii, Boozhoo, Shekoli, Koolamalsi to all in our SOAHAC community,
Last Friday, April 1, Pope Francis offered an apology for the deplorable conduct of the Catholic Church as a key author of the Residential School System.
Our SOAHAC leadership team acknowledges that this is an important step forward in the truth and reconciliation process, and that there is still much more to do to ensure the healing and improved wellbeing of Indigenous people on Turtle Island. We know that many people in our community will have different reactions to this step, and we acknowledge that our community will need time and space to consider how they wish to respond.
We are also mindful that Aboriginal Health Access Centres like SOAHAC must necessarily exist to ensure more equitable access to culturally appropriate healthcare, which addresses the longstanding trauma and systemic prejudice faced by Indigenous people.
Our entire SOAHAC team remains committed to this work and to the principle of Indigenous Health in Indigenous Hands. This commitment, along with our unique approach to holistic care – blending primary health care, traditional healing and cultural wisdom such as the Seven Grandfathers Teachings – will help ensure that more Indigenous people can continue to heal from the tragic effects of colonialism, not the least of which, is the Residential School System.
Thank you for your continued support as we walk the path of reconciliation together, Indigenous, and non-Indigenous people, communities and institutions alike.
Miigwetch / Thank You,
